The International Wine Award


Parallel to the exhibition, WinExpo Georgia has established the International Wine Award, which has been held for 16 years now and is a great contributor to the popularization of Georgia, both in the country and abroad. Winners of the contest are revealed by the Georgian and foreign Masters of Wine, sommeliers, and wine experts. The head of the competition is Tim Atkin, an award-winning British Master of Wine, broadcaster, and the author at Decanter and many other prestigious publications. The contest is conducted on the principle of blind tasting; the best Wines are selected in eight categories, and winners are awarded with gold, silver, and bronze medals.

Tim Atkin
Master of Wine ( Head of Jury)
Tim Atkin MW is a renowned UK wine journalist with a global audience. He writes for Harpers, Decanter, and runs his award-winning website timatkin.com. Also an accomplished photographer, his work has been featured in The Guardian, The Telegraph, and exhibited worldwide. Tim has won numerous prestigious awards throughout his career, including multiple Glenfiddich Wine Writer Awards, the Louis Roederer Wine Columnist and Online Communicator of the Year Awards, and the Fortnum & Mason Online Drink Writer of the Year. He was also named Communicator of the Year by the International Wine & Spirit Competition and recognized by Wine Intelligence as one of the industry's most influential figures.

Beth Willard
Wine Writer ( Co-Chair of the Decanter World Wine Awards ) - Australia
Beth began her wine career in her native Australia before spending two years in Bordeaux and later relocating to the UK. After over a decade as a wine buyer for UK-based importers, including Direct Wines, she transitioned into wine writing. She regularly contributes to Decanter and serves as Co-Chair of the Decanter World Wine Awards, where she has overseen the Georgian jury. Beth specializes in wines from Spain and Eastern Europe and collaborates with Tim Atkin MW on detailed reports, with Navarra, Aragón, and Rueda as recent focuses. She is a member of the Gran Orden de Caballeros del Vino and the Confrérie de Tokaji.

GERD STEPP
Winemaker & Consultant
With over 25 years in viticulture and winemaking, Gerd Stepp brings global expertise and precision to every bottle. After studying oenology, he refined his skills across New Zealand, Africa, South America, and Europe—leading vineyards, managing production, and consulting for both boutique estates and major retailers like Marks & Spencer. Now based in Germany’s Pfalz region, Gerd crafts expressive, balanced wines from hand-selected vineyards. His minimal-intervention approach honors the unique character of each site. In addition to running Stepp Wines, he consults internationally, with ongoing projects in Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, and Argentina.
Kenichi Ohashi MW
Master of Wine. (President of Yamajin Co. LTD)
Kenichi Ohashi is Japan’s leading expert on wine and sake, based in Tokyo. He is president of Yamajin Co., Ltd., a distributor specializing in wine, sake, and local spirits, and also runs Red Bridge Co., Ltd., promoting both domestic and international wines and sake. In 2015, he became the first Japan-residing national to earn the title of Master of Wine. He is also a certified Sake Expert Assessor—the highest qualification from Japan’s National Research Institute of Brewing. Kenichi serves as a panel chair at the International Wine Challenge (IWC) in London and co-chairs its sake competition. In 2016, he was named IWC’s Personality of the Year.

‘Gus’ Jian Zhu 朱简 MW
Gus is the first Chinese national Master of Wine.
Gus is a Research and Development Scientist at Harv 81 Group, overseeing quality control and haloanisole testing for natural cork products at Cork Supply USA. He also conducts sensory research for Creative Oak at Tonnellerie Ô. His journey into the wine world began as a wine educator under the mentorship of Fongyee Walker MW and Edward Ragg MW, founders of Dragon Phoenix Wine Consulting. In 2017, he earned a Master of Science in Viticulture and Enology from UC Davis. Gus is deeply committed to the academic side of wine, reflected in his book Behind the Glass: The Chemical and Sensorial Terroir of Wine Tasting.
